Picture this: you find a stray kitten on the side of the road and can’t help but feel you were meant to find it. You nurse it back to health and consider putting it up for adoption, but something tells you this kitten chose you. Two years later, you decide the kitten needs a friend. The food bowls and cat towers in your house continue to multiply, and it’s almost as if you have enough accommodations for 10 cats. So, what’s a few more furry friends?

Before you know it, you’re sipping your coffee out of your ‘Best Cat Mama Ever’ mug and walking around the house in your cat slippers. You aren’t really sure if this qualifies you or not, but your mind starts to wonder…am I a crazy cat lady now?

Let me tell you, the line between normal cat lady and crazy cat lady is very thin. And coming from someone who’s been on both sides, the crazy cat lady side is wayyyyyy cooler. So, fear not, my friend. Join me.

If you suspect you’re turning into a crazy cat lady, I’m going to tell you 10 surefire signs that point to this inevitability.

10 Signs You Are a Crazy Cat Lady

1. You spend more time with your cats than humans

And who can blame you? Let’s be real. Cats are way better than humans. I mean, they’re soft little furballs that don’t talk, don’t require you to have a social battery, and let out little squeaks while they stretch their cute little toe beans. Uhm, yes please!

2. You show people pictures of your cats like they’re your children

You know when you’re sitting around in the breakroom and whip out your phone to show your coworker yet another picture of your adorable kitty cat laying in the sun (kind of like the one you showed them yesterday, and the day before that)? Yeah, this is what people do with their babies. But your cats ARE your babies, so it’s totally fine! Embrace that cat mama life, girl!

3. You start shopping around for a cat clock

You know those clocks with the moving tails? Having one of these is basically a right of passage for any crazy cat lady, so go ahead and get that clock. At the very least, it will be a conversation piece. 😉

4. You stop caring about the cat fur on your clothes

I mean, it’s just going to come back five minutes after lint-rolling yourself, so why bother? Rock that fur, cat mama! It’s a badge of honor.

5. You start collecting little cat figurines

Okay, well, maybe this one is just me. I’ve taken a liking to walking around antique stores and searching for little old-fashioned cat figurines to put in my curio cabinet. Am I 29 years old? Yes. Does this make me sound 92? Also yes, but it’s fine.

6. You have actual conversations with your cat

I’ll tell ya, I’m a huge offender of this one. I will sit there and converse with my cats Luna and Hazel all the livelong day. I’m convinced they know exactly what I’m saying judging by the expression on their faces (an expression filled with heavy judgement).

7. You can’t run a simple errand without stopping at the pet store to see the kitties

What’s better than a sweet little treat and a trip to the pet store in between errands? Careful though…you might end up with more cats. Not that more cats is a bad thing (unless you ask my husband).

8. You start filling the house with cheesy cat quotes

‘I’m pawsitive my cats are my whole world.’, ‘Help meowt here!’, ‘Cat hair is my glitter.’

You know the drill.

9. You start feeding the neighborhood stray cats

Cats can sense when there’s a crazy cat lady in their midst that’s going to take care of them. I’ve actually built a stray cat shelter for this cutie that comes around pretty often. Her name is Skittles.

She now gets fed dry food morning and night, with some wet food once in a while and clean water everyday. But trust me, she’s definitely still a ‘stray’ cat and I for sure don’t consider her my fully outdoor cat (lol).

10. When you think about your future, you actually don’t mind an image of you surrounded by 50 cats

Ah yes, the ultimate crazy cat lady. She sits at her kitchen table in her comfy robe and slippers, sipping on a hot cup of tea surrounded by a ton of cats. If this no longer sounds like a bad gig to you, congratulations. You’ve made it to full crazy cat lady.

We have fun here. You’re gonna love it.

  1. Such a fun post! I’m pretty sure that if I weren’t allergic to cats, I’d already have at least three of them, and my phone’s memory would be full of their furry little heads.
    Thanks for sharing!

    1. Hi Kimberly,

Thanks for reading! It’s so hard NOT to be a crazy pet person! They’re just so cute and give us so much unconditional love. 🩷

  7. This post had me laughing out loud! I’m definitely guilty of at least 7 of these signs – especially showing people endless photos of my cats like they’re my children (because they ARE!). The part about cat hair being our glitter really resonated with me. I’ve completely given up on lint rollers at this point!
I love how you’ve embraced the crazy cat lady life with such humor and pride. Your little antique cat figurine collection sounds adorable, and building a shelter for Skittles shows what a kind heart you have. Thanks for making me feel better about my own cat obsession – looks like I’m in excellent company! 🐱

    1. Hi Jordan,

I’m so glad you liked the article! Thank you so much for your kind words. I feel like it’s my purpose in life to help as many kitty cats as I can. 🩷 It’s so hard not to be obsessed with our furballs!
